Opportunities for Volunteer Mediators

Thanks to its many great volunteers, OC Human Relations is able to provide high quality mediation services at no cost to Orange County residents. At the same time, volunteers are provided with an opportunity to develop meditation and negotiation skills through practical experience in the field of dispute resolution. In addition to conducing in-person and/or online mediations, volunteers may also choose to participate in community outreach and training support. Volunteers from all walks of life are welcome and there is a special need for individuals who have bilingual abilities to help serve the needs of our diverse community.

Volunteer activities generally take place during regular weekday work hours (8AM to 5 PM). Within those parameters, the volunteer has flexibility to schedule their volunteer time around their own needs and other commitments. Some volunteers choose to volunteer on a consistent regular schedule while other volunteers participate more sporadically as their schedule allows. All volunteer contributions are greatly appreciated.

Completion of Basic Mediation Training is a prerequisite for becoming a volunteer mediator in the Dispute Resolution Program. Individual who have already been trained in mediation will need to provide verification of completion along with a course description/syllabus so we can confirm that the training meets Dispute Resolution Program Act (DRPA) requirements. For those who are not already trained, DRPA-certified Basic Mediation Training is offered through OC Human Relations several times per year. A background check with the Department of Justice must also be completed before an individual can be accepted as a volunteer.

Once accepted into the volunteer program, volunteers go through a rigorous mentored learning experience before they are given direct responsibility for casework. Because of this intensive training investment by the agency, we ask that new volunteers commit to volunteering an average of 4 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months. Many of our volunteers continue to volunteer for years beyond this minimum commitment.

Opportunities for Dispute Resolution Interns

OC Human Relations Dispute Resolution volunteers who are currently enrolled in academic programs may use their volunteer time at OCHR to fulfill internship requirements at their school. Reach out to us to discuss in more detail if you are interested in this option

Intern With Our Community Building Team

OC Human Relations provides programs to foster mutual understanding and respect among residents in order to make Orange County a better place for ALL people to live, work and do business. We strive to create a future where our county’s diversity is realized as a source of our strength and build bridges of understanding to make our community a place where all people are valued and included.

The objective of this internship opportunity is to further the agency’s mission of encouraging dialogue, promoting, and empowering community coalitions in the county. Though the size of our task is large, our resources are limited thus we rely heavily on interns to help make our goals a reality. If you are interested in this opportunity, we welcome your interest and participation.

The internship program provides a means to complement academic work with practical experience through professional development and departmental support that identifies skills, develops leadership, and addresses critical community needs. The goal of the program is to empower the interns in hopes to further their career goals.

Terms:
Internships are available during Spring, Summer, and Fall terms. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis year-round until all positions are filled. All positions are unpaid. Interns are expected to work at least 10 hours a week during Spring and Fall terms, and 20 hours a week during the Summer term. Additionally, interns must be ready to work weekends and evenings, as needed.

This is an unpaid internship. Interns can receive college credit, if needed. However, it is the responsibility of the intern to file all necessary paperwork to receive credit. Interns are responsible for their own travel, living (housing & food), and transportation arrangements.

Qualifications:

  1. Candidates must be higher education students pursuing a bachelor’s degree or advanced degree. Exceptions may be made for highly qualified applicants.
  2. Enthusiasm, interest, and familiarity with OCHR’s work.
  3. Ability to work with diverse individuals/cultures in a diplomatic and non-biased manner. It is important to be able to deal respectfully with sensitive issues involving divergent viewpoints.
  4. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  5. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and internet research.
  6. Ability to convey information in a professional and diplomatic manner.
  7. Good organizational skills and attention to detail is crucial.
  8. Bilingual skills are a definite asset.

Interns will receive basic training in all aspects of OCHR’s work, but will be assigned a focus project in one of the following areas:

  1. Hate Crimes
    To create community awareness, increase collaboration for community and police response, and assist primary and secondary victims of hate.
  2. Police Community Relations
    To improve the relationship between communities and law enforcement.
  3. Community Dialogues
    To create a safe environment for people to dialogue an develop action steps to make community connections and engage in civic activities.
  4. IamOC
    Conducting and transcribing interviews with diverse Orange County residents for our #IamOC project
  5. Cultural Competency Development
    To create awareness of diversity issue and develop intercultural understanding for groups and institutions.
  6. Community Building Initiatives
    To increase cohesion and mobilize the community’s commitments, resources, and skills to build healthy communities.
  7. Community Leadership Development
    To provide grassroots leadership training and recognize outstanding human relations contributions.
  8. General Professional Skills
    Organizing Team Resource Materials – assisting team with compiling, organizing and categorizing training and resource materials.

Volunteer or Intern with our Marketing and Social Media Team

Who:
We are looking for creative self-starters to volunteer with our team and assist with our marketing plan. We’d like to build a small volunteer team of people who are experienced in/or interested in external communications, storytelling and marketing (and, of course, human relations and diversity issues).

What:
Volunteers will assist the Development Team and report to the Director of Development. We offer valuable work experience in a supportive and motivating work environment. At this time we are not able to provide a stipend or salary.

Why:
We need pro-bono help throughout the year with our marketing and outreach, especially around our human relations special events, fundraising campaigns, and free/low cost services we offer to the community (namely hate crime education/response and conflict mediation).

Where/When:
Our volunteer positions can be virtual (with scheduled in-person touch base meetings), or located at our office. We’re looking for volunteers to make a time commitment of at least 10 hours per week for a minimum of three months.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Research and write (short) pieces for publication in our e-newsletter or annual report
  • Research story leads and conduct interviews; draft articles for press
  • Assist in planning and executing educational efforts for members, donors and community friends including phone calls, mailings, and other related marketing activities
  • Support social media strategy (content and posts)
  • Maintain and update media database, including contacts, outreach, media hits and impressions
  • Assist with partner communications, such as thank you letters
  • Support the creation of fundraising materials and campaigns
  • Carry out other creative projects, designed in consultation with staff

Qualifications:
We are seeking detail oriented, creative, energetic, and motivated individuals to support our outreach efforts. While experience is useful and preferred, a strong skill set is more valuable; we will provide mentorship and ample opportunity for growth.

Volunteer with our Annual Awards Gala

Help OC Human Relations raise funds for its award-winning programs while gaining valuable hands-on event organizing and coordinating experience. We need the help of a few good volunteers and interns who are committed to helping us create an outstanding event!  We need superstar volunteers and interns who are good at organizing and following through on projects to help us prepare for our annual Awards event which takes place in May of each year.  The event typically features fund-raising activities such as a silent auction, live auction, wine-pull etc.

As our only fundraising event of the year, our awards banquet and related activities take lots of planning and preparation so we need people who are willing to work with us for several months. This position offers the satisfaction of knowing you helped to support OC Human Relations’ programs while gaining valuable work experience in a friendly, enjoyable and stimulating environment.

Agency Description:

Awards Event volunteers and interns will work with the Director of Development, and the Awards Event Coordinator to identify, procure and prepare donations for the silent auction and help to prepare for our Awards event scheduled for May.  Click here for background information about previous years’ events.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Researching and requesting silent auction donations
  • Following up with committee members to procure donations of auction items
  • Making written requests for auction items
  • Completion of donation forms and maintaining records of donated items
  • Working with other volunteers and staff to prepare for the day of the event
  • Helping to organize auction on day of the event

Skills Required:

  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to work with diverse people in a respectful and diplomatic manner
  • Computer skills to be able to create and send documents, e-mails, letters, etc.

Hours and Time Commitment:

  • This project requires a commitment beginning in the fall up through the event scheduled for May, and, if available, for a follow up meeting a week later.
  • It could require from 1 to 5 hours a week, with more time needed as the event draws near, preferably during our office hours of 8 to 5, Monday through Friday, although much of the work could be done from the volunteer’s home.
