YouthSpeak Speech Contest

OC Human Relations’ annual YouthSpeak Speech Contest is a county-wide search for the top human relations speech written by an 8th-12th grade student.

Last year, OC Human Relations launched our kNOw Hate initiative – by knowing hate, we can say “no” to hate.  This year, students were asked to submit a short, inspirational speech reflecting on the topic of “How can you know hate, denounce hate and create unity in our diverse communities?”

After reading through a multitude of high-quality entries and listening to the speeches of the short-listed students, the Board of OC Human Relations selected Andrew Peterson, a student at Huntington Beach High School, as the recipient of the 2018 award.

Andrew delivered his speech at the 2018 Human Relations Awards on May 3, 2018.  He, and the two runners-up, also received a cash scholarship.

2nd place, Kennedy Dutra, Edison High School

3rd place, Jessica Tran, Savanna High School
