Community Building Team
Internship & Volunteer Job Description
Agency Description:
The OC Human Relations Commission and Council provide programs to foster mutual understanding and respect among residents in order to make Orange County a better place for ALL people to live, work and do business. We strive to create a future where our county’s diversity is realized as a source of our strength and build bridges of understanding to make our community a place where all people are valued and included.
 
Hours: Flexible schedule, mornings, afternoons and/or evenings, depending on focus projects. We require an intern to commit to 120 hours per semester. There are also summer internships and two-semester internships available.
Deadline: Open; on-going.
Certificate: Interns will receive a Certificate of Completion verifying that they have completed a 120-hour internship with OC Human Relations.
Qualifications: Ability to work with diverse individuals/cultures in a diplomatic and non-biased manner. It is important to be able to deal respectfully with sensitive issues involving divergent viewpoints. Good oral and written communication skills and an interest in human relations issues are a must. Bilingual skills are a definite asset.
 
Description of Projects in Community Building Team:
  1. Hate Crimes
    • To create community awareness, increase collaboration for community and police response, and assist primary and secondary victims of hate.
  2. Police Community Relations
    • To improve the relationship between communities and law enforcement.
  3. Community Dialogues
    • To create a safe environment for people to dialogue an develop action steps to make community connections and engage in civic activities.
  4. Cultural Competency Development
    • To create awareness of diversity issue and develop intercultural understanding for groups and institutions.
  5. Community Building Initiatives
    • To increase cohesion and mobilize the community's commitments, resources, and skills to build healthy communities.
  6. Community Leadership Development
    • To provide grassroots leadership training and recognize outstanding human relations contributions.
  7. Organizational Support
    • To strengthen, support and connect with community organizations and efforts.
  8. Grant Research
    • To research funding opportunities for OC Human Relations.
  9. General Office Work
    • Organizing Team Resource Materials - assisting team with compiling, organizing and categorizing training and resource materials.

Dispute Resolution Intern
Job Description
Hours: Flexible schedule will include 6-10 hours per week; 3 or 4-hour shifts, mornings or afternoons, Mon.-Fri., 8AM-5PM. (A total of at least 120 hours minimum per semester.) Summer internships also available.
Deadline: Open; on-going.
Certificate: Interns are required to complete a 32-hour mediation certification training (unless already trained) in addition to their internship hours. All training fees are waived for interns. (A refundable $165 deposit is required) Certification and refund will be issued upon completion of internship.
General Duties:
  • Casework as a mediator in a court-based office (small claims) and with community disputes (landlord/tenant, neighbor/neighbor, consumer/merchant, employer/employee, etc.)
  • Assist with mediation trainings and educational presentations
  • Assist with community outreach
  • Assist with volunteer training and recruitment
  • Grant-related documentation
  • Qualifications:
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) individuals are highly desirable
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals in a diplomatic and non-biased manner
  • An interest and/or skills in mediation

    Additional Information:
    Unless already trained, interns will attend a 32-hour Mediation Certification Training. As community mediators, interns will develop meditation and negotiation skills and gain practical experience as such. This is a unique opportunity to work with diverse groups and individuals to promote cooperative and amicable resolution of conflicts. Interns will also have the opportunity to assist with program development and implementation which could include public speaking, if desired. Interns will be working in a human relations environment and will be expected to deal tactfully and respectfully with sensitive issues involving divergent viewpoints and cultures.
     
    Internship Requirements:
    To qualify for an internship you must complete all 32 hours of Basic Mediation Training and be available for both office and court mediation duties. The certificate will be provided at the completion of the internship. If the hours are not completed the student will forfeit the $165 deposit and pay the balance of the training fee. The Internship must be a requirement for school and a contact name and number from teacher/professor is required.

    Marketing & Community Relations Intern
    OC Human Relations is looking for interns. We have internships available for qualified individuals in marketing, fundraising, and assistant to the Deputy Director. We offer valuable work experience in a supportive and motivating work environment.
     
    Agency Description:
    The Orange County Human Relations Commission and Council provide programs in partnership with schools, corporations, individuals, cities and foundations to foster mutual understanding and respect among residents in order to make Orange County a better place for ALL people to live, work, and do business.
     
    Hours:
    The internship requires a time commitment of at least 10 hours per week for a minimum of three months. At this time we are not able to provide a stipend or salary.
     
    Responsibilities Includes:
    • Research and write (short) pieces for publication in Building BRIDGES Newsletter
    • Research story leads and conduct interviews; draft articles for press
    • Help facilitate outreach effort
    • Assist in planning and executing educational efforts for members, donors and community friends including phone calls, mailings, and other related marketing activities.
    • Assist in public relations efforts by working with mainstream and alternative media.
    • Maintain and update media database
    • Carry out other projects, designed in consultation with the intern and staff
     
    Skills Required:
    • Excellent writing and communication skills
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
    • Ability to work on multiple projects at once, with various deadlines
    • Good research skills
    • Good editing and grammar skills
    • Organized, self-motivated and able to work independently on projects
    • Ability to work with a diverse range of people
    • Familiarity with PC and Macintosh computers, and the World Wide Web

      • To assist in organizing Team Resource Materials – assisting team with compiling, organizing and categorizing training and resource materials, creating databases, writing and distributing correspondence and program information.
