The BRIDGES program works to improve inter-group relations by partnering with schools and communities to create and sustain a safe, inclusive school climate that respects society's diversity.
Since 1988, BRIDGES has worked cooperatively with the entire school community-students, parents, teachers, administrators and staff-to-meet each individual school's needs and objectives. The program trains participants to use positive peer support to promote inter-group understanding and alternatives to violence in schools. |

| How does it work? |
Principal and leadership consultation: In order to introduce the program in depth, assess school needs and identify school's objectives.
Creation of school human relations task force: A group comprised of teachers, parents, students and administrators is established to be the core of the efforts on campus. The task force identifies, investigates and addresses human relations needs by creating implementing projects and programs designed to improve the over all human relations climate on campus.
Human Relations Retreats: Aim to increase awareness of self and others, encourage dialogue about issues including race, class, sexism, gender roles and identity and assess the inter group relations climate. The retreats allow for opportunities to strategize according to the issues that are identified by the students and build capacity for the task force's efforts. These are also used to provide advanced trainings in Conflict Mediation and Facilitation.
BearPaw Preserve: This mountain retreat provides a safe, intimate environment where human relations can be enhanced through contact with nature. Activities at the BearPaw Preserve strengthen and deepen connections among diverse students by providing overnight accommodations for human relations retreats. At these retreats representatives of school community members work collaboratively towards creating and sustaining a safe, inclusive school climate that is respectful of society's diversity.
School wide initiatives: Share the retreat and task force's messages with the whole school community via new programs, projects and campaigns. Through the planning process participants are exposed to advanced leadership skills such as strategic planning and project management.
Staff In-Service sessions: Topics covered include general diversity awareness, curriculum development and skill enhancement to deal with intolerance in the classroom. Follow up consultation on planning campus and district activities and other diversity programming.
